I'll keep my fingers crossed for a future, epic cross-over episode where the new, recast Xena and Gabrielle in some way end up within the alternate reality of the original sequence (wherein Xena has clearly return from the useless (again)). But, that doesn't suggest that NBC could not have supplied hardcore, nutball Xenites a compromise by either inexperienced lighting a separate Xena "revival" miniseries (or Television film) OR by asking the present runner to develop a pilot script wherein Lawless returns as Xena for one final grand journey with Gabrielle earlier than passing the chakram to the brand new, recast version of Xena thanks to the story-telling magic of time journey, parallel dimensions or alternate realities.
